Flock Upon Yonder
A collection of hyperpop flamingos explored through sculpture and digital remasters, showing at La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, through May 2024.
Sküt @inkedbyskut (pronounced “Scooot”) is a LA native experimental pop #artist, sculptor, and muralist.
His queer-contemporary sculptures and digital re-masters of the flamingo as a queer icon in his series Flock, a visual hyperpop collection made from upcycled and remixed materials in unapologetic pink flavors.
He has exhibited at Mondrian Los Angeles, Aquarium of the Pacific, The Artist Tree, TAG Gallery, and The Other Art Fair.
You know Sküt best as original designer and Co-Founder of Grindr, the world’s largest gay social network. Sküt’s art explores themes of equity and conservation through color, light, and happiness.
What’s in a Flock? A lot, really.
All of Sküt’s creations are made with sustainability in mind. For Flock, the armature of each sculpture is made from upcycled materials.
Sküt saves aluminum soda and beer cans to create and stabilize the cores for his three dimensional creations. The cans are bunched together and crushed with a mallet, before being wrapped in foil and duct tape to form each flamingo pose. Those skeletal structures are then meticulously wrapped in Apoxie Sculpt, a self-curing clay that solidifies in three hours after actvation. Creating new art from waste is one of Sküt’s ways to emphasize conservation and care for our incredible planet.
And don’t worry, the canvases are also upcycled too. Sküt collects old art that his friends are going to throw away. Those abandoned canvases become fresh new home art pieces after a caring coat of spackle and primer. As they say, one human’s waste becomes another’s treasure…
